Ikea’s Mävinn collection returnsIKEA

Ikea has released a second collection of Mävinn, featuring handcrafted homeware in a vibrant palette, all of which celebrates local craftsmanship.

From a striped cotton throw with tassels to a handcrafted pot hanger made using macrame techniques, the joyful 17-strong collection combines colour and pattern to tell a story of cultural heritage.

Ikea launched its first iteration of Mävinn in June 2023, but the Swedish furniture retailer has been working with social enterprises to design and produce products since 2012.

For this second collection, Mävinn has been crafted in collaboration with five social businesses and artisans from Bangladesh, India, and Jordan. The collection supports their efforts to provide jobs for people in vulnerable communities, empowering them to grow as skilled professionals while creating a positive impact.

The limited edition collection – made of cotton or jute and sourced where the social businesses operate – spans baskets, rugs, cushion covers, bedspreads, throws and more. Embodying the unique skills and heritage of the local culture, each piece is handwoven, braided, or embroidered.

'Mävinn showcases craft techniques passed down through generations, and it’s amazing to create together and learn from each other with these artisans who have kept these traditions alive,' says Paulin Machado, designer at Ikea of Sweden.

And cat lovers may like this one especially: Mävinn features a cat-themed pouch and cushion cover, and a basket which ensures everyone in the household has a place to sleep. ‘See the cat peeking over the edge? This large, decorative basket in braided jute and cotton is perfect for storing things you want close at hand – or as a cosy place for your cat,' says Ikea.

Our favourite is the jute runner with colourful embroidered dots (£49), perfect for a kitchen, bedroom or hallway. It was made by Classical in Bangladesh, a social business which creates jobs and a steady income for women in rural areas. Also top of our wishlist is the beautiful storage basket handwoven from braids of jute (£19), with two sturdy handles.

'This collection celebrates the 12-year partnership we have built together, setting a strong example of how we can work long-term to enable people to acquire handcrafted everyday items, while creating life-changing opportunities for those who make them. We hope this collection inspires a deeper appreciation for handcrafted items and the effort and cultural heritage woven into every piece,' says Maria Vinka, designer at Ikea of Sweden.
