Ina Garten's beloved Kuhn Rikon veggie peeler is down to just $5
The carbon steel blades are hard to beat for pro-level results, fans say.
The holidays are just around the corner, and you know what that means ... there's plenty of meal prep to come! With that in mind, we spotted a deal on a tool Ina Garten herself swears by: the Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler. You can find it on the official Barefoot Contessa Equipment List (along with some of her other kitchen staples) and it's quite reasonably priced at $5. Read on to learn about the peeler that's managed to capture the hearts of Ina (and, according to The Kitchn, Giada De Laurentiis), along with hundreds of Amazon customers.
Never again dread that waiting pile of carrots or potatoes on your counter — this guy will keep your veg-peeling game sharp in more ways than one.
Why is it a good deal? 💰
When was the last time you swapped out your veggie peeler? You should aim to replace it at least once a year, Garten says. She told Food & Wine magazine, "Vegetable peelers get rusty, they get dull and they're very cheap, so you can just throw them out and buy new ones." Well, you're in luck, because Ina's go-to peeler is on sale for a mere $5, the lowest it's been in years. No, it's not a huge discount, but it makes a great stocking stuffer, so stock up and save more! (FYI, prices vary depending on color.)
Why do I need this? 🤔
It really shouldn't come as a surprise that the Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler has made its way into Ina's hands, considering it has been a kitchen staple since 1986. According to the Switzerland-based brand, more than 20 million have been sold worldwide.
The peeler is versatile (recommended for a wide range of both soft and hard fruits and vegetables), comfortable (the ergonomic shape is ideal for left- or right-handers), convenient (dishwasher-safe ... though hand-washing with warm, soapy water is recommended) and durable (it features a sharp, straight carbon steel blade that "maximizes smoothness and minimizes wastage"). It's also downright adorable and, as mentioned above, fairly affordable.
What reviewers are saying 💬
As if Ina's stamp of approval wasn't enough to seal the deal, the Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler also comes backed by happy Amazon customers, beloved for its no-fuss, comfortable design and smooth moves.
Pros 👍
"Our peeler was getting dull and didn't really work, so I took a chance on these," shared one satisfied shopper. "What a great option! They're small enough to fit in the drawer without jamming it up, but they don't feel too small in my hands. They're super sharp and peel quickly and evenly, with anything from cucumbers to butternut squash (which are usually difficult because the skin is so hard)."
"A few months ago, I struggled when faced with acorn squash, armed only with a regular straight peeler," explained another. "An online search gave suggestions for the Y-shape peeler, so I ordered one. ... Guess what — it's great. Super-sharp blade and [so] easy to figure out that it needs a much lighter touch than my straight peeler."
"No more scraped knuckles," wrote a third. "I'm a lefty who has struggled peeling fruits and vegetables for over 60 years. This one really works for me."
Cons 👎
Some reviewers caution that these aren't peelers you'll want to rinse and let dry on their own.
"It’s the restaurant standard for a reason," said one, adding, "[I] recommend to hand-wash and dry immediately, despite [the] manufacturer saying dishwasher-safe (rust[ing] is most likely due to sitting in a humid environment after washing). If any rust appears on the blade, it’s easily removed with a scoring pad."
"The blades are steel, so after I wash it, I immediately dry it and rub a thin layer of Crisco on the blades to keep them protected from the elements," wrote another. "I did try not treating the blades once and the rust began appearing. I was able to remove the rust easily. Just take care of the blade!"
Swiss ingenuity and excellence — it ain't just about cuckoo clocks, fondue and chocolate anymore.
This red peeler isn't currently on sale, but we're fans of its festive, cheery hue.
