James Beard nominee is bringing a ‘boutique bodega’ to the Triangle. Here’s where & when
One of the most shouted-about restaurant groups in the Triangle is launching a new concept in RTP this year.
The owners of the acclaimed Indian restaurant Cheeni plan to open a small gourmet market called Nanny Goat in the new Horseshoe at Hub RTP. This will be the second concept at Hub RTP for owner Preeti Waas, who plans to also open a Cheeni location in the development.
“We’ve created Nanny Goat to be the go-to market and shop within Hub RTP,” said Waas in a news release. “Our ‘boutique bodega’ of sundries, fresh flowers, and bread and pastries from local bakers will ensure the Horseshoe lobby is a charming destination, not just a space to pass through. The offerings will encompass products from all local makers, including savory and sweet pastries from Chef Tie Whittaker of Buttermilk Boutique, breads with a global twist from Breadwaala and cookies from our own bakery, Sugar & Spice Kitchen.”
Nanny Goat will be a cozy space, at 980 square feet, in the lobby of the Horseshoe building. Other restaurants coming to the development include Cheeni, Prime STQ and Drift Coffee.
“We will support local, micro-businesses owned by immigrants by providing kitchen space at our commissary in Durham and an outlet for the sale of their pre-packaged specialty goods at Nanny Goat,” said Waas in a news release.
Waas is a two-time James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Southeast for her restaurant Cheeni, now located in downtown Durham. This week, Cheeni’s sister cocktail spot The Bar Beej was named a semifinalist for the James Beard award for Best New Bar in the country.
At Nanny Goat, Waas is focusing on gourmet grab-and-go bites and gifts, playing on the “whatever-you-need” tradition of the neighborhood bodega. The market will have seats indoors and out and likely serve its phenomenal version of a chocolate chip cookie.
