Gone are the days when there were just two major denim categories: skinny and wide-leg jeans. Now, we find ourselves in the midst of mom, boyfriend, cropped, flared, and barrel-leg jeans. If the latter stumped you, that’s because it’s one of the newer additions to the lineup, calling on Jennifer Lopez as its unofficial spokesperson.

Lopez was seen in Aspen, Colorado sporting a Western ‘fit that included a yeehaw-approved hat and barn jacket that would make Martha Stewart proud. She went the cozy route, slipping into a snuggly, cream-colored turtleneck sweater and pair of Brunello Cucinelli suede boots. But in true J.Lo fashion, she spiced her look up with a pair of Free People barrel-leg jeans.

The multi-hyphanate proved that being an outfit repeater isn’t a bad thing, since she’s worn this exact style (in a different color, of course) before. And who could blame her when the comically large balloon pants command attention while maintaining a laid-back aesthetic. Even better? Her under-$100 bottoms are still in stock in various washes—but not for long.

Some may call her pants “controversial,” though, not quite understanding the optical illusion-like silhouette. While they may seem offputting, I’d give them a shot; the fitted waist flares out into a wide leg right before tapering at the ankles. This creates a natural curve, balancing out the hips and flattering many body types. Plus, they’re roomy and comfy.

Other notable celebrities like Katie Holmes and Julianne Moore understand the appeal, having reached for the bow-legged style. On both occasions, the shapely denim elevated a basic cardigan, sweet Mary Jane flats, and a classic jean jacket with ease, proving balloon pants can be worn with nearly anything.

Make like Lopez and snag her exact jeans for $98 before they sell out. Or, snag your favorite iteration of the barrel-leg denim trend, below.
