Although I’d like to think that my style is effortless, that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m on Pinterest 24/7, I usually change my outfit several times before leaving the house, and my full-time job literally consists of scouring the internet for trends. So yes, there’s a lot of thought behind my looks, even the most casual ones.
Because I’m still trying to master the whole “I woke up like this,” thing, I often turn to style icons like Katie Holmes for inspo. Holmes, the queen of artfully dressing casually, was recently spotted in New York City wearing the ultimate cool-girl winter uniform: a plaid jacket, baggy jeans, and white sneakers. She accessorized the look with oversized sunnies, a ribbed beanie, and naturally, a Starbucks coffee cup. Celebrities, they’re just like us!

While her entire look is worth recreating, I was particularly drawn to her wide-leg pants and neutral kicks—it’s a style formula that works in every season. Inspired by the star’s look, I went to Amazon in search of lookalikes and found plenty of similar styles, including baggy jeans and white sneakers that start at just $35.

After spending all of 2024 in baggy denim, I recently tried playing around with tighter silhouettes. The verdict? Flowy, loose jeans are still number one in my heart. Similar to Holmes, I love the look of mid-wash pants, including these classic Levi’s. When I really want an elongating effect, I’ll reach for pairs that are both baggy and wide-leg, such as these dark-wash Lee pants. You also can’t go wrong with perfectly slouchy styles, and these under-$50 jeans certainly fit that bill.

As Holmes proved, every wardrobe also needs a go-to pair of white sneakers. However, with their subtle two-toned coloring, hers are anything but basic. According to fans, the shoes feel like “walking on a cloud.” For something chunkier, consider these platform sneakers, which have memory foam insoles that are perfect for getting your steps in this year.

Luckily, you don’t have to think long and hard about how to accessorize your new pants and jeans combo. Simply take a page out of Holmes’s book by throwing on a roomy shacket, ribbed beanie, and rectangular shades. For extra warmth, I’d also layer with a thick sweater and add in a cashmere scarf for good measure.
