Oscars 2022: The best and worst dressed stars from the red carpet
The 2022 Oscars saw some of the biggest names in Hollywood vying to take home one of entertainment's most coveted awards.
After a pared down ceremony last year due to COVID-19, the 94th Annual Academy Awards opted to return to a full-scale red carpet spectacular this year. The return to form provided the perfect opportunity for A-list stars to flex their fashion muscles in traditional red carpet attire, while others opted to buck tradition in favour of some edgier ensembles that left fans baffled.
After much deliberation, we've gathered a list of the best and worst dressed stars from the 2022 Oscars red carpet— and one look that left our style editors divided.
BEST: Jessica Chastain
The Best Actress nominee for "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" pulled out all the stops for the Oscars red carpet. The 45-year-old sparkled in an ombré gown with plunging V-neck by Gucci that featured a dramatic ruffled hem—perfect for Hollywood's most glamorous night.
WORST: Kristen Stewart
Stewart's press tour for "Spencer" included some of her best red carpet moments to date. However, the first-time Best Actress nominee dropped the ball when it came to her Oscars ensemble. The casual Chanel shorts and open shirt and suit jacket looked better suited for the Grammys rather than the Academy Awards.
UNDECIDED: Nicole Kidman
While some of our style team were big fans of Kidman's dove grey Armani Privê gown, others couldn't look past the bubble waist detail — or the flowing ribbon. Although Kidman's statuesque feature allows her pull off almost any look, this particular Oscar gown left our team divided.
BEST: Jennifer Garner
Garner has been particularly selective with her red carpet appearances as of late, which is why our hearts skipped a beat when we saw her latest look at the Oscars. Garner showcased her timeless style in an off-the-shoulder cherry red gown by Brandon Maxwell that featured statement diamond earrings and an elegant diamond bracelet.
WORST: Jada Pinkett Smith
Sometimes there are red carpet looks that leave you speechless — for all the wrong reasons. The 50-year-old star's emerald green look by JeanPaul Gaultier has already been dubbed a "sexy cabbage leaf" online. So, if there's one thing, we can thank Pinkett Smith for it's the reminder to add more leafy greens to our diet.
BEST: Zendaya
The "Dune" star's two-piece ensemble by Valentino was a modern take on a memorable fashion look worn by Sharon Stone to the 1998 Oscars. Stone made headlines for wearing a white button down from the Gap with a sleek Vera Wang skirt. Zendaya's show-stopping look featured a cropped silk top and high-waisted silver skirt for a '90s-inspired look that's worthy of a 2022 red carpet.
WORST: Billie Eilish
Eilish's ruffled gown by Gucci was a standout on the red carpet that left our team of style editors scratching our heads. While Eilish is known for opting for oversized apparel, the lack of shape on this off-the-shoulder gown looked messy and out of place on the Oscars red carpet.
BEST: Zoe Kravitz
Kravitz looked like a modern Audrey Hepburn in this vintage-inspired strapless column gown in pale pink shade and asymmetrical bow detail. The minimal styling, save for some stand-out diamond pieces and her side-swept bangs made for one timeless Oscars look.
WORST: Maggie Gyllenhaal
Gyllenhaal's avant-garde Schiaparelli gown featured ornate gold details that looked more like household fixtures that distracted and overpowered "The Lost Daughter" director.
BEST: Simu Liu
The Canadian star of Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" stood out on the red carpet in a bold and vibrant tux by Versace that put your run-of-the-mill black suit to shame.
WORST: Olivia Coleman
Coleman's flowing silver Dior gown, unkempt hairstyle and smokey eye were a recipe for disaster on the 2022 Oscar red carpet. "The Lost Daughter" and Best Actress nominee's pleated gown was a fashion fail in our books.
