I Tried Dunkin's New Cold Foam Creamers & I Had One Major Gripe

It's hard to say when exactly cold foam became the frothy phenomenon that it is today. But chances are your go-to cup of coffee has been graced with the fluffy, milk-based topping at some point. Hype for cold foam has gotten so huge that some brands are bottling it up to sell to the masses. One of the latest coffee behemoths to tap into the cold foam market is Dunkin'.

Beginning today, fans of the coffee and donut shop can visit their favorite grocery store to get their hands on one of two new offerings: Extra Extra cold foam creamer and Chocolate cold foam creamer. Both are available for purchase for a suggested price of $5.99 (14 oz. can). And just in time for today's release, I had the chance to try both flavors. Here are mythoughts.

Given that Extra Extra is a nod to ordering your coffee extra creamy and extra sweet at Dunkin', I wasn't sure what to expect. Would the foam taste like sweetened milk? Would there be a hint of vanilla? So many questions! To put it pretty simply, taste-wise it's a lot like whipped cream, but with a different texture. That texture, in my opinion, is a bit smoother and creamier than a cold foam you would find at Dunkin' or a similar coffee shop, but I liked it because I'm a big whipped cream fan.

I kept it simple with this cold foam, dispensing it on top of a hot cup of slightly sweetened coffee (no milk). I'm glad I went that route because both cold foams are definitely on the sweet side. Depending on your sugar-to-coffee ratio, too much and you could be teetering on sickly sweet.

On the plus side, I do think I just found an aesthetically-pleasing way to ditch the cream and sugar for my next cup of coffee.

We're approaching Valentine's Day, so love is in the air and so is the irresistible pairing of strawberries and chocolate. I just so happened to have a carton of Vita Coco Treats Strawberries & Cream in the fridge, so I figured that I had to pair it with Dunkin's Chocolate cold foam creamer. For those who have never tried it, Vita Coco Treats is comparable to a certain, wildly viral Pink Drink.

Before whipping up my strawberry-chocolate concoction, I sampled the foam on its own. Definitely chocolate-y, like chocolate milk in foam form. Like the Extra Extra, I did find the texture to be more creamy than foamy, but again, it works for me.

As for the Vita Coco Treats topped with chocolate foam, I have to say it's a V-Day win: A chocolate-covered strawberry in liquid form with an enticing texture to top it off.

But—and yes, there's always a but—the sweet-meets-sweeter combo may have been a bit too much for me. If you're not a lover of the decadent, I'd say try starting off your Dunkin' Chocolate cold foam creamer with something less sweet. An iced dark coffee, maybe?

Overall Thoughts

Both of Dunkin's cold foam creamers, which are made using real cream and sugar, come in containers reminiscent of a canister of whipped cream. Even the method of dispensing the cold foam is similar: "Shake, Foam and Cream, Enjoy." I was really impressed at how smooth each cold foam came out the canister. I've never used a cold foam creamer before, so I expected it to be a little on the explosive side (think, a can of whipped cream on its last leg). But to my surprise, it was chaos-free.

Of the two flavors, my favorite was hands-down Extra Extra. I found it to be the more versatile of the two and I foresee a lot of experimenting being done with this one (hello, foam-topped White Russian!). The one major gripe I do have with the cold foam creamers is that the sweetness factor can quickly get out of control, so watch out for that.

Overall, convenience is a major pro with the cold foam creamers. Instead of running to Dunkin' you can simply speed walk it to your fridge.
