Chip and Joanna Gaines Are Doing This Thing Together For the Time Ever: ‘New Stage in Our Marriage’ (Exclusive)
Joanna Gaines shares the hobby she and Chip are enjoying together for the first time — and what inspires them to do it
Though they've been married for 20 years, share five kids, and own multiple businesses together, Joanna Gaines says she and husband Chip have only recently added this mutual hobby to their schedules: working out.
"We joke that we've known each other for 25 years and we've never once worked out together," Gaines tells PEOPLE.
"Last year I said, 'Chip, let's start working out because I want to be young for the kids.' I feel like every choice I make now will affect me at 70, and I don't want to wait until I'm 70 to be like, 'Oops I need to fix some stuff.'"

Gaines says having a 6-year-old son, Crew, motivates her to stay fit.
"I told Chip, we need to do something to make us stay strong," Gaines, 46, continues. "And so we just got into this, and it's a totally different thing for us. We've never worked out together before and now we do."

She says they have a virtual trainer that they meet in their "tiny home gym" on Magnolia Farm in Waco, Texas.
"It's just us pushing each other and holding each other accountable," she says. "It's been this whole other thing, and it feels good to do it. So it's been fun — we've done so much together in the past that it's like this whole new stage in our marriage."
Gaines's youngest son Crew is also the inspiration behind her latest children's book, The World Needs the Wonder You See.
"What I love about the book is realizing how much wisdom there is to be gleaned from little children," she says. The book was inspired by Crew's constant wonder at the world around him — especially on the grounds of Magnolia Farm.
"There are so many things we think we're teaching our kids but really if we stop to listen, they're actually teaching us so much." she continues. "And I think that's this idea with these children's books. It's like, what are the kids teaching me right now in this season of life for me? What is Crew teaching me? And then how can I articulate that and bring that to life in a book?"
She says he motivates her to stop and look around more.
"I just love watching him and how he moves throughout his day," she says.
"He’s always looking out the window, the first to notice something. He has the childlike faith like, “If I just look, I’ll find something.” A lot of us have that when we’re younger, but then I feel like we stop expecting wonder, because we’re so busy. And he’s just inspired me to live like he does."
