If you were around Old Salem in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in July of 1937, you would have been able to witness the birth of an American icon, Krispy Kreme. That’s when Vernon Rudolph rented a building in Old Salem to make doughnuts from a recipe he bought from a New Orleans chef.

The aroma coming from that building as Rudolph made the doughnuts meant to be sold at grocery stores was so hard to resist that he had to cut a hole in an outside wall of the building to sell them directly to customers on the sidewalk. Those customers were the first lucky doughnut lovers to experience the joy of a fresh, hot Krispy Kreme Original Glazed Doughnut.

That was 87 years ago, and on July 12, Krispy Kreme celebrates its 87th birthday by selling a dozen doughnuts made from that original recipe for less than $1.

How To Get a Dozen Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for 87 Cents

Krispy Kreme has a sweet deal for its birthday. Buy any dozen doughnuts—including the current summer selections or Kit Kat Collection—at regular price, and you'll be gifted with an Original Glazed dozen for just 87 cents. In case you missed it, the Kit Kat Collection features three variations on a Krispy Kreme doughnut married with Kit Kat yumminess: the Kit Kat Crunch, Kit Kat Cookie Dream, and Kit Kat Salted Caramel Brownie.

Whether you opt for the Kit Kat Collection, a combination of your favorite glazed, iced, and filled doughnuts, or simply 12 Original Glazed as your first dozen, your second dozen will be very similar to those first doughnuts that Rudolph passed through the hole-in-the-wall at his shop.

Customers can purchase the doughnuts online using the code BDAY for pickup or delivery or directly in shops across the U.S. on July 12 while supplies last. The limit is four 87-cent dozens with the purchase of four full-priced dozens.
